Our Commitment to Sustainability
The Union of Concerned Scientists combines independent scientific research and citizen action to develop innovative, practical environmental solutions and promote responsible changes in government policy, corporate practices and consumer choices. But we don't just promote solutions, we adopt them so that we operate in the most environmentally responsible way possible.
As better technologies and products become available, our sustainability efforts evolve and improve. To ensure we incorporate new advancements to improve our environmental practices, we have five sustainability commitments that guide us:
- Operate sustainably
- Minimize carbon emissions
- Measure carbon emissions annually
- Become carbon neutral
- Act as a model for other organizations
In addition to forming a set of sustainability commitments, UCS's sustainability task force, comprised of staff from all three offices and every organizational department, created a five-year plan that sets benchmarks for the organization to meet our commitments through 2012. The task force meets monthly to keep us on track.
