NRC Should be Reformed into an Effective Guardian of Public Health and Safety

David Lochbaum's Testimony before House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming

On March 12, 2008, UCS's David Lochbaum testified before the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming during a hearing titled "Nuclear Power in a Warming World: Solution or Illusion?"

Lochbaum testified about the serious problems caused by mismanagement and ineffective regulatory oversight during nuclear plant construction and operation. He cited several examples of recent problems that strongly suggest the causes have not yet been corrected. He then forecast how these unremedied causes could turn the alleged nuclear revival into a disastrous nuclear re-run.

Lochbaum identified the best protection against a re-run as reforming the Nuclear Regulatory Commission into an effective guardian of public health and safety. For additional details about the problems and their solutions, please read the PDF file containing the written testimony.
