INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Residents who find they need to make extensive repairs or even rebuild as a result of the tornadoes and flooding of May 27th through June 25, 2004, have a responsibility to themselves, their families and their neighbors to rebuild in a way that reduces future losses from similar storms. This is called ‘mitigation.’
Mitigation representatives with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available in Allen County this Saturday and Sunday to answer questions about specific mitigation measures.

Those who stop by the display at the store can learn about damage reduction and prevention, including how to rebuild with materials less susceptible to water damage, wind resistant reinforcement construction, and safe rooms. A miniature house built specifically for such educational efforts will be on display.
“We want to help prevent loss of life and property,” said State Coordinating Officer Luther J. Taylor, Sr., of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). “While the government can help victims get back on their feet, we don’t want our neighbors and friends to go through repetitive suffering.”
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
