INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- State and federal officials announced today that federal/state Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) open in Indiana to assist residents affected by the severe tornadoes and flooding which began May 27th, will be closed Sundays beginning this weekend.

The DRCs will remain open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday until further notice.

The DRCs, located in the counties of Clark, Crawford, Marion, Miami, Orange, and Tippecanoe, are designed to provide more detailed program information to people who have already applied for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) toll-free registration/helpline number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hearing impaired should call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

“Anyone still needing assistance, especially temporary, short term housing or home repairs, should visit the DRC,” said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Justo “Tito” Hernandez. “Our intent is to help people get back to a sense of normalcy as quickly as possible.”

In addition, those people who have registered and have additional questions or need to update any information that may have changed, for instance, telephone numbers or addresses where individuals can be contacted, are encouraged to call the registration/helpline.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA’s continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
