European Bumblebee
Both New Zealand and Tasmania now have large feral populations of European Bumblebees, (Bombus terrestris). Fertilised queens occasionally slip through quarantine aboard ships and aircraft from these areas. And the Horticulture industy continues to lobby for their introduction!
Since feral bumblebees were discovered in Hobart in 1992, they have spread to even the most remote areas of Tasmania. They may disrupt the pollination of native plants, increase seed production of weeds, and can sting repeatedly. Photo courtesy of Dr Michael Batley, CSIRO. See the Issues page on bumblebees |
