Smart Fortwo tops among non-hybrids in EPA mileage ratings

The diminutive Smart Fortwo is small in stature--but big in mpgs, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ranks it as the most fuel-efficient car among non-hybrids in the nation in next year’s fuel economy guide.

The 2009 Fortwo gets 41 mpg on the highway. The Honda Civic and Toyota Prius hybrids get 45 mpg on the highway, ranking them No. 1. The Prius also gets gets 48 mpg in the city, the best in that category. Two diesel versions of the Volkswagen Jetta also get 41 mpg.

The Fortwo generates power from a three-cylinder engine positioned at the back of the car, and its output is rated at 70 hp.

Next year’s model will be hitting showrooms soon, and more than 19,000 have been sold since the vehicle launched in the United States about eight months ago.

The cars are distributed through a subsidiary of Penske Automotive Group, which is based in suburban Detroit.
