UNESCO promotes freedom of the press as a basic human right. In the light of latest events, the Director-General of UNESCO reminds UN resolutions forbidding attacks against journalists and calling on Member States to reaffirm their commitment to freedom of the press.

UNESCO Office in Rabat to organise training on newspaper design in Arabic

A training workshop for journalism teachers and media professionals will take place from 19 to 23 January 2009 at the Institut supérieur de l’information et de la communication (ISIC) in Rabat, Morocco. It will focus on newspaper design in Arabic.
A training workshop will take place later this month in Rabat to strengthen the professional capacities of the Moroccan written media.

Chinese and Egyptian laureates to receive UNESCO prize for the use of ICT in Education

Today, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, will award the 2008 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Education to the Chinese and Egyptian laureates, Zhang Deming and Hoda Baraka. Mr Matsuura will present each of the laureates with a diploma and US$25,000 during the ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters, in the presence of the Minister of Education of Bahrain, Majed Bin Ali Al-Noaimi.
Today, the Director-General of UNESCO will award the 2008 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, deplored attacks on media installations in Gaza and condemned the killing of Palestinian journalist Basel Faraj who died on the line of duty on 6 January.
Koïchiro Matsuura recalled UN resolution, which forbids attacks against journalists.

“Even though the notions of identity and otherness, universality and particularity seem rather abstract, the civilizational references determine our life on an every day basis. They affect the way we perceive ourselves, the way we interact with our neighbours, TV channels that we choose to watch and technology we choose to use,” said Abhimanyu Singh, Director of the UNESCO Office in Beijing, at the opening of UNESCO’s Forum on Media and ICT for the Dialogue among Civilizations.
The Forum on media and ICT in Beijing stressed the need to base the dialogue on real life interaction between people from all cultures.
