Friday, January 16 – Saturday, January 17 In the West, an upper-level ridge of high pressure over the West Coast will limit vertical mixing in the atmosphere. Furthermore, cool overnight temperatures will allow temperature inversions to form, especially over inland areas, trapping pollutants near the surface. These conditions, combined with light winds and high pollutant carryover from previous days, will lead to widespread Moderate AQI levels, with Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups AQI levels expected in western Washington, northern and central California, and the Salt Lake City, UT, region.
In the East, surface high pressure will move over the Southeast, producing generally southerly winds over the eastern Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states. These winds will transport moisture and pollutants into the aforementioned regions, enhancing particle production and leading to Moderate AQI levels on Saturday. Farther north, light winds across Maine will limit pollutant dispersion, leading to Moderate AQI levels on Friday.
