U.S. Department of Labor announces $3 million grant to help Kentucky  respond to impacts caused by Base Realignment and Closure actions

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $3 million grant to Kentucky to assist more than 5,000 civilian employees of the U.S. Department of Defense and private contractors who have been impacted by Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) actions at Fort Knox and several Armed Forces Reserve Centers within the commonwealth.

“This $3 million grant for Kentucky will provide civilian defense workers adversely impacted by BRAC with employment services to help them transition into new careers,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

The grant, awarded to the Kentucky Department for Workforce Investment, will provide direct services in multiple locations throughout the commonwealth.  Services will include assessment, counseling, case management, supportive services, job training and development, relocation assistance, job placement and follow-up.

A $300,000 grant was awarded to Kentucky in June 2005 specifically for the purpose of planning for BRAC actions.  The $3 million grant announced today will put that plan into action.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
