Reduce natural biodiversity and native species

Invasive species impact nearly half of the species currently listed as Threatened or Endangered under the U.S. Federal Endangered Species Act. To understand what this means, one must understand the term biodiversity. In 1985, the term "Biodiversity" was coined as a contraction of the phrase "biological diversity," but the famous ecologist E.O Wilson promoted and made the term popular in his book BioDiversity (Wilson 1988). It is defined asÖthe variety of all forms of life, from genes to species, through to the broad scale of ecosystems (Faith, Daniel P., "Biodiversity", The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Summer 2003 Edition), Edward N. Zalta (ed.)). Essentially, invasive species reduce biodiversity by outcompeting native species for resources and thereby eliminating them from the genetic pool, which reduces the larger diversity of species.
