Sharks are one of the many research interests of the Ichthyology Division. Here you will find an abundant source of information about sharks, including current shark research, the shark fishery, and shark conservation.
Sawfishes are in trouble worldwide. This section includes how you can get involved with conservation efforts and the importance of reporting sawfish encounters to the recovery plan for the smalltooth sawfish.
About 27,650 species of extant fishes are known, and approximately 11,300 species, or 41% of all fish species live in freshwater. Here you will find information about our freshwater research, including the All Catfish Species Inventory (ACSI).
The Ichthyology division works closely with many organizations involved in the study and conservation of fishes and sharks including the Southeastern Fishes Council (SFC), the Shark Specialist Group (SSG), the National Shark Research Consortium (NSRC), the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) and the Sawfish Recovery Team (SRT).
The University of Florida ichthyology collection represents a rich resource of biodiversity information and is an unparalleled source of information on three key south Florida ecosystems, Florida Bay, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys. Search for specimens using our online database.
