The "Guide to Federal Aquaculture Programs and Services" was prepared by the Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture (JSA) as a directional resource to aquaculture programs and services within the Federal government. This document provides program and service descriptions and World Wide Web links to the homepages of many Federal government agencies or organizations with respect to its aquaculture activities. Sources of contact for further information include addresses, phone numbers, and/or email addresses are included or are located on specific WWW web pages.
The contents of this guide are intended to provide individuals seeking assistance in aquaculture with a resource tool for locating Government agencies that support aquaculture-related activities. The National Aquaculture Improvement Act of 1985 states that it is national policy "to promote aquaculture in the United States by...encouraging aquaculture activities and programs in both the public and private sectors of the economy." It recognizes that aquaculture in the United States is a viable approach toward meeting food needs. It also recognizes that aquaculture provides resources for industrial materials, pharmaceuticals, and energy, and assists in pollution control. As a whole, the aquaculture industry can help reduce the U.S. trade deficit and alleviate the world's hunger and natural resource problems.
