IEA Offers New Data on Member Countries’ Oil Stocks

Each IEA member country has an obligation to hold oil stocks of at least 90 days of net-imports.  But how do countries meet this obligation?  What are the stockholding systems in each member country?  To improve understanding of this central element of oil security, the IEA now offers for the first time detailed information on member countries’ stocks, measured in days of net imports.  This new table will be updated monthly. Producers Hit by Fall in Oil Prices
After hitting a high of USD 147 a barrel in July, world oil prices have crashed to their lowest level since 2004. Commenting on the impact of declining prices on oil-producing nations, IEA Director of Energy Markets and Security Didier Houssin noted, “The brutality and speed of the price decline is a huge shock economically and politically for some of these countries.”

Innocent Parties Affected by Gas Dispute
Commenting on the Russia-Ukraine gas dispute, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka said, “Innocent parties should not be penalised by this kind of man-made crisis. It’s not physical disruption by some kind of accident.” He added that the stoppage of Russian gas supply to Europe showed that some European countries, dependent on Russian gas deliveries through Ukraine, were in urgent need of enhancing gas security by diversifying their supply sources.
