Service Learning Program

Service Learning is a method by which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized community service experiences. It is a partnership among students, faculty, and the community to both meet genuine needs of the community and provide opportunities for students' personal and academic development. This program was developed to close the gap between Kentucky State University's students, faculty, staff, and the Frankfort community. All freshman enrolled in the UNV 101 (University Orientation) course are required to get two hours of orientation/training and go out and give eight hours of service to community sites. Twenty-one students participated in the Spring Semester 2003; 260 students participated in the Fall Semester 2003. The Service Learning staff developed partnerships with many of the sites to include: Frankfort Soup Kitchen, Franklin County Red Cross, YMCA, Franklin County High School, KSU Admissions Office, United Way, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and many others. This is a FREE program offered to children in grades K-6; Monday - Thursday from 3:00 - 4:45 p.m. K-6. The program is designed to enhance the basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills of Elementary school age children. We provide tutoring in various academic areas to include: Social Studies, Reading Comprehension, Science, Mathematics and English. We service all Elementary schools in the Frankfort community, providing services for approximately fifty (50) children per academic year. The overall goal of the program is to change the attitudes of our young children towards education, learning, and life by emphasizing the enhancement of knowledge through educational programs.

Summer Youth Enrichment Program

This half-day program was held for the first time this Summer of 2003. The program is designed to reach and teach children ages 6-12 during their Summer break (6 weeks). Our goals were to incorporate fun with learning this Summer. The children participated in several learning sessions to include: Spanish, Basic Computers, Reading, Math, and Arts & Crafts. We went on four field trips this Summer to the Lexington Children's Museum, Skatarama Skating Rink, Capital Bowling Alley, and Kid's Place. We also attended a Magic Show and an Exotic Animal Show sponsored by the Paul Sawyer Library. Various people from the Frankfort and KSU community came in to give the students lessons on 1st Aid/Safety, Personal Hygiene, Nutrition, “Good Touch, Bad Touch,” Planting, Self-Awareness, and Decision Making. Mr. Blaine Allen, Director of ARAMARK Services at KSU presented a thorough lesson on “Table Etiquette,” where the students enjoyed an exquisite five-course meal.
