Two regions receive funds for local food efforts
The Regional Food Systems Working Group (RFSWG) coordinated by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University is providing $10,000 grants to help get local food efforts off the ground in Marshall County in central Iowa and Black Hawk and surrounding counties in northeast Iowa. RFSWG-supported efforts are now working in 40 of Iowa's 99 counties. Read more

December 8 workshop focuses on ways to prevent future Iowa flooding
In the aftermath of Iowa’s devastating summer floods, there were a multitude of questions about why this catastrophe occurred and what could be done to help prevent a recurrence. “Learning from the Floods of 2008: Practical Strategies for Resilience,” a workshop on the potential ways to mitigate future flooding, will be held December 8 at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Ames. New Leopold tool estimates markets for 204 food products nationwide
The Leopold Center and the Center for Transportation Research and Education at Iowa State University have developed the U.S. Food Market Size Estimator that can approximate demand for 204 food products in every county of the United States. Products include milk, cheese and dairy foods; fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables; grains; and meat, fish and nuts. Read more

National organic ag expert to discuss climate change November 23
The chief executive for one of the nation's longest running organic research trials will discuss ways that cover crops, composting and other organic practices could reduce our carbon footprint and global warming. Tim LaSalle from The Rodale Institute will speak at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 23 in Ames. Read more

Leopold Flood Lessons '08: Perennials key in reducing sediment loss
Preliminary data from a Leopold Center-funded project shows that perennial prairie strips planted at critical points in fields of corn and soybean have minimized soil erosion, even during periods of heavy rainfall. Read more
