Academic Performance and Youth Substance Use

The NSDUH Report:   Academic Performance and Substance Use among Students Aged 12 to 17 (2002, 2003, & 2004)

Highlights:

  • Based on combined data from SAMHSA's 2002-2004 National Surveys on Drug Use & Health, an estimated 70.4% of students aged 12 to 17 reported that they had an A or B grade average in their last semester or grading period, while 29.6% had a C average or less.
  • Youths with an A or B average in school were more likely to have used alcohol than any other substances during the past month, but youths with a D or less than D average were more likely to have used cigarettes than other substances during this time period.
  • The likelihood of participating in two or more youth activities (such as Scouts, church choir, team sports, school band, and school clubs) was highest for youths with an A average and lowest for youths with a D or less than D average.

This Short Report, The NSDUH Report:   Academic Performance and Substance Use among Students Aged 12 to 17 (2002, 2003, & 2004), is based on SAMHSA's  National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use by State.
