PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS AS A CAUSE OF PHYTOTOXICITY IN GREENHOUSE SUBSTRATES REPEATEDLY USED IN CUCUMBER GROWING

Authors:   B. Politycka, D. Wójcik-Wojtkowiak, T. Pudelski
Abstract:
The aim of this study was learning of compounds responsible for phytotoxicity of substrates repeatedly used in cucumber growing. Two greenhouse substrates mixed with black peat, sawdust and pine bark were studied. Results of the vegetative experiment have demonstrated a clear dependence between phenolic compound content in the substrates and their phytotoxicity level. The addition of PVP /phenol fixing compound/ for aqueous substrate extraxts eliminated phytotoxicity almost entirely. Seven phenolic acids were identified in sübstrates: ferulic, p-hydroxybenzoic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic, salicylic, syringic and vanillic.
