MOS In the Community

Community Relations

Extending to all realms of the Museum, community relations promotes participation by new audiences, in particular those from under-represented cultural and ethnic communities and individuals with disabilities.

Partnerships and Collaborations

A major component of the strategy is developing partnerships and collaborations with community-based organizations that work during out-of-school time with youth ages 10 - 19 or with adults who are under represented.

Through these partnerships, the Museum is able to leverage the resources available within various communities and also to reach new audiences. The Museum relies on these communities for consultation, evaluation, staff development, promotion, and recruitment. In return, our partners utilize a number of resources available at the Museum like the Computer Clubhouse, scholarships for overnights, youth volunteer positions leading to paid internships, and others listed below.

Financial Access Program (FAP)

The FAP improves access to the Exhibit Halls, Mugar Omni Theater, and Planetarium through free and discounted admission. Out-of-school programs and other non-profit organizations are eligible. Each year, approximately 17,000 - 18,000 under-represented visitors benefit from the FAP program.

To make the Museum more accessible and navigable, the outreach team offers foreign language guides for speakers of other languages as well as the availability of assistive technologies, multi-sensory exhibits, and other amenities.
