Advanced Vehicles and Fuels Basics

Electric buses, like this one used in an NREL fleet study, help reduce our reliance on imported petroleum and don't produce harmful air pollutants.
Improving the fuel economy of vehicles and using alternative fuels help decrease our reliance on imported petroleum and produce fewer tailpipe emissions. To reduce our nation's petroleum fuel consumption, NREL conducts research to develop and advance the following transportation technologies:
- Advanced vehicle systems
- Alternative fuels
- Fuel cell vehicles
- Hybrid electric vehicles
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
