Power Lunch Lecture Series: Big Wind Comes to the National Wind Technology Center! by NREL's Jim Green & Lee Jay Fingersh

January 21, 2009, 12:00 - 1:00 MST

  • Golden, CO - NREL Visitors Center
  • Contact: Visitors Center 303.384.6565

The National Wind Technology Center will go super-size in 2009 with the installation of two new utility-scale wind turbines, a GE 1.5 MW and a Siemens 2.3 MW.  With rotor sweeps about the length of a football field, these behemoths are capable of powering hundreds of homes and will give the NWTC a whole new look.

These turbines will give NREL researchers new opportunities to conduct research on the aerodynamics characteristics of commercial-scale turbines with the goal of improving both performance and reliability.  This research will help achieve the scenario, developed jointly by DOE and the industry, of providing 20% of the nation's electricity with wind power by 2030.

Project Leads Jim Green & Lee Jay Fingersh will present an illustrated Power Lunch lecture on January 21 at the NREL Visitors Center including photos of the recent delivery of the GE turbine.
