About the Integrated Pest Management Team

The Integrated Pest Management Team is a far-reaching program with its hands in almost every other team's projects. Integrated pest management is the most important concept for today's agricultural management of the land and has grown as a widespread practice for farmers in Massachusetts. By using a combination of non-toxic pest control methods, the team has helped farmers reduce the use of pesticides by 70% on many crops. In 2000, the Massachusetts Governor's office recognized the work of the program with the Toxics Use Reduction Award.

The team is also working with school districts to improve their pest control practices. With "Structural IPM" protocols the team is reducing pesticide use in schools and other public buildings. School custodians responsible for pesticide application are better trained thanks to workshops run by the team. The team also designed a web site unique in the nation for training pesticide applicators on integrated pest management methods.

In cooperation with the EPA, the team has led efforts to build New England's first demonstration facility for research and training in the handling and storage of pesticides. For more information on the facility and the team contact William Coli at (413) 545-1051 or visit the Integrated Pest Management Team website.
