Archival Sources
Our office contains a small collection of reference files and non-official copies of Federal records, history books and articles, and photographs. While we do not serve as an archive, we will do our best to help locate appropriate points of contact for persons in search of historically-relevant materials.
The National Archives and Records Administration, Civil Reference Branch, owns and manages most of PHS's historical records. The largest group of these is at the Archives II facility in College Park, Maryland, under Record Group 90 (Public Health Service). There are also records at Archives II of PHS operating divisions under the record groups of those divisions, e.g., the National Institutes of Health (Record Group 443) and the Food and Drug Administration (Record Group 88). Most of the records for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Record Group 442) are housed in NARA's Southeast Region facility in East Point, Georgia, near Atlanta. PHS maintains control over many of the official records created in recent decades. These materials may be stored at NARA Federal Records Centers around the country or may still be held by PHS agencies, programs, or officials. For further information, please contact the Department of Health & Human Services Freedom Of Information Act Office.
