Team
Motivation (Continued)
Successful
teams that sustain motivation have a mission or purpose that aligns
with the needs and wants of the members (Grazier).* Members are
motivated because participation meets important human needs. Referencing
Maslow's hierarchy, teams help to provide:
- Sustenance
- Team participation usually occurs at work. Work provides pay
that enables the satisfaction of sustenance needs.
- Safety
and Security - Membership on a cohesive team can contribute
to a sense of security in that the individual is not alone in
task performance and others are available to help when work load
becomes excessive.
- Belonging
- Team membership can fulfill part of the belonging need both
within the team and by team connection to the larger organization.
- Esteem
- Contribution to team task performance can lead to recognition,
convey status, gain attention, enhance reputation, and gain appreciation
feedback. These, in turn, support self-respect, self-confidence,
and feelings of self-worth, competency, and achievement.
- Self-actualization
- Participation in a high performing team can lead to personal
growth, through accomplishment and learning from others on the
team. Self-fulfillment may be experienced by the contribution
of individual creativity and increased job satisfaction.
