Important Changes This Month

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly there are two major changes:

(1) Petroleum demand data for the non-OECD countries for 2005 and 2006 have been revised to match data in the recently released Table 1.2 of the International Energy Annual 2006 and non-OECD petroleum demand data for 2007 and 2008 have been revised based on revisions to 2006 data and new information.

(2) World Oil Supply data for 2006 have been revised to match data in the recently released Table G.2 of the International Energy Annual 2006 and some petroleum supply data for 2007 and 2008 have been revised based on revisions to 2006 data and new information.

Important Changes This Month

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, there is one major change. A new aggregate, OPEC, is now reported for data for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the tables in the Petroleum (Oil) Production section, the Oil Balance section, and the Petroleum (Oil) Imports section. OPEC includes data for the thirteen countries that currently belong to OPEC: Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. The previous aggregates OPEC-12, that excluded Ecuador, and OPEC-11, that excluded Angola and Ecuador, will no longer be reported. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

World petroleum production data for the month of January 2008; and OECD country petroleum demand, imports, and stocks data for the month of December 2007, the Fourth Quarter of 2007, and the Year 2007 have been added.

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly there are two major changes:

(1) Petroleum demand data for OECD countries, other than the United States and the U.S. Territories, have been revised for 1990-1994 based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual review of historical OECD petroleum data, the results of which were released in the August 10, 2007 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

(2) Petroleum production data for 1980-2005 have been revised to match data in the recently released Petroleum Production Time Series Tables of the International Energy Annual 2005.

July 2007 Release (August 7, 2007)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, there are two major changes:

April 2007 Release (May 8, 2007)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, there is one major change. Aggregate OPEC data in the tables in the Petroleum (Oil) Imports section, which were previously reported for OPEC-11, are now reported for OPEC-12 by adding data on imports from Angola. Also, the two tables with imports from Kuwait, Tables 3.15 and 4.18 , have been dropped.

March 2007 Release (April 5, 2007)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, there are two major changes:

(1) Two aggregates are now reported for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in the tables in the Petroleum (Oil) Production section and the Oil Balance section. OPEC-12 includes data for the twelve countries that currently belong to OPEC: Algeria, Angola, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. OPEC-11 does not include data for Angola. (Aggregate OPEC data in the tables in the Petroleum (Oil) Imports section are currently reported for OPEC-11 but will be changed to OPEC-12 in the April 2007 International Petroleum Monthly.)

(2) Data for seven additional countries (Azerbaijan, Denmark, Equatorial Guinea, Kazakhstan, Sudan, Vietnam, and Yemen) and an aggregate total for the Persian Gulf countries have been added to the tables of World Crude Oil Production (Including Lease Condensate) in the Petroleum (Oil) Production section. As can be seen in that section, these additions mean that there are now four monthly tables (1.1a-1.1d) and four annual tables (4.1a-4.1d) instead of the previous three. Also, the order of the countries in the tables has been changed to a basically alphabetical basis. Data for Other, World, OPEC-12, OPEC-11, Persian Gulf and North Sea are reported in tables 1.1d and 4.1d.

October 2006 Release (October 31, 2006)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly (IPM), United States petroleum data for 2005 have been revised to match data in the Energy Information Administration's recently released Petroleum Supply Annual 2005, Volume 1 and Volume 2. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

August 2006 Release (September 1, 2006)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly (IPM), petroleum demand data for OECD countries, other than the United States and the U.S. Territories, have been revised for 1984 and for 1990-1994 based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual review of historical OECD petroleum data, the results of which were released in the August 11, 2006 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

July 2006 Release (August 2, 2006)

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly (IPM), petroleum demand data for OECD countries, other than the United States and the U.S. Territories, have been revised from 1995 forward based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual review of historical OECD petroleum data, the results of which were released in the July 12, 2006 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service. In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly (IPM) there are three major changes: (1) petroleum production and non-OECD petroleum demand data for 1980-2003 have been revised to match data in the recently released Petroleum Section of the International Energy Annual 2003 and some petroleum production and non-OECD petroleum demand data for 2004 and 2005 have been revised based on revisions to 2003 data and new information; (2) United States petroleum data for 2004 have been revised to match data in the Energy Information Administration's recently released Petroleum Supply Annual 2004, Volume 1 and Volume 2; and (3) petroleum demand data for other OECD countries have been revised from 1985 forward based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual review of historical OECD petroleum data, the results of which were released in the July 13, 2005 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service. All revised data are shown in bold italic font.

December 2004 Release

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, petroleum demand imports, and stocks data for Slovakia, covering the period January 1984 through September 2004, that were first released in the December 10, 2004 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service (MODS), have been added (to Tables 1.5-1.7, 2.1, 2.3-2.4, 3.1-3.15, and 4.5-4.18) including to aggregate data for Other OECD Europe, OECD Europe, Total OECD Europe, Other OECD, and Total OECD. In tables 2.1, 2.4, and 4.6, previous demand data for Slovakia have been removed from the aggregate data for Other Non-OECD and Total Non-OECD. In Table 4.6, demand data for the years 1970-1983 for Czechoslovakia (that separated into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993) were added to the aggregate data for OECD Europe and Total OECD. Also in Table 4.6, demand data for Canada (1991-1994) and Japan (1990-1994) have been updated to relflect revisions made by the International Energy Agency in the September 9, 2004 version of MODS. Finally, in Tables 2.1 and 2.2, supply data for Slovakia were moved from the aggregate data for Other Non-OECD and Total Non-OECD to the aggregate data for Other OECD and Total OECD. All revised data are shown in bold italic font.

July 2004 Release

In this release of the International Petroleum Monthly, United States petroleum data for 2003 have been revised to match data in the Energy Information Administration's recently released Petroleum Supply Annual 2003, Volume 1 and Volume 2. Also, petroleum demand data for other OECD countries have been revised from 1985 forward based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) annual review of historical OECD petroleum data, the results of which were released in the July 13, 2004 version of the IEA's Monthly Oil Data Service. May 2004 Release

November 2003 Release

In this release of the International Petroelum Monthly (IPM), the source of the petroleum demand data for the years 1984-2001 in Tables 1.7, 2.1, 2.4, and 4.6 has been changed. It is now the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Monthly Oil Data Service, the same source that was already used for the data for the years 2002 and 2003. Previously, the source was the International Energy Agency's Monthly Oil and Gas Statistics Database. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

October 2003 Release

In this release of the International Petroelum Monthly (IPM), the source of the petroleum stocks and stock draws data for the years 1984-2001 in Tables 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, and 4.5 and the petroleum import data for the years 1991-2000 in Tables 4.7-4.18 has been changed. It is now the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Monthly Oil Data Service, the same source that was already used for the data for the years 2002 and 2003 in the petroleum stocks and stock draws tables and for the years 2001 and 2002 in the petroleum import data. Previously, the source was the International Energy Agency's Monthly Oil and Gas Statistics Database. Revised data are shown in bold italic font.

August 2003 Release

This release of the International Petroelum Monthly (IPM) has two important changes: (1) Beginning in January 2002, petroleum stocks data for South Korea now include previously confidential government-controlled petroleum stocks. This change affects Tables 1.5, 2.1, 2.3, and 4.5.; and (2) Table 1.6 has been converted from Commercial and Government-Owned Oil Stocks to Industry and Government-Controlled Oil Stocks to match the stock categories reported in the International Energy Agency's Monthly Oil Data Service

June 2003 Release

All United States monthly, quarterly, and annual data for 2002 have been revised to match the data in the Energy Information Administration's recently released Petroleum Supply Annual 2002, Volume I and Volume II.

March 2003 Release

All petroleum production and petroleum demand data for 1980-2001 have been revised to match data in the recently released International Energy Annual 2001 and some petroleum production and petroleum demand data for 2002 have been revised based on revisions to 2001 data and new information.

October 2002 Release

This release of the International Petroelum Monthly (IPM) has two important changes: (1) a new data source has been introduced; and (2) the use of new processing systems has affected the format and availability of the tables and figures (graphs). The Energy Information Administration (EIA) uses petroleum statistics from the International Energy Agency (IEA) to develop monthly data for petroleum demand, imports, and stocks for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Recently the IEA asked that EIA stop using data from IEA's Monthly Oil and Gas Statistics Database and start to use data from their Monthly Oil Data System (MODS). Starting with this release of the IPM, users will find new MODS data in various tables, as described below. In addition, EIA is changing the systems for processing and presenting its monthly international petroleum statistics. Some older mainframe computer processing systems are no longer available and it may require a few months to fully implement new systems. This has affected our reporting capabilities. Many tables will appear in this release. However, some tables and figures will be temporarily unavailable and replacements will be phased in during the coming months. See below for specific changes.

Permanent changes include: (1) OECD country petroleum import data will be based on MODS beginning with January 2001 data, while OECD country petroleum demand and stocks data will be based on MODS beginning with January 2002 data; (2) tables in txt format will be replaced by tables in spreadsheet format; (3) there will no longer be a PDF format version of the IPM; and (4) the four figures (Figure 1.-Figure 4.) will no longer be available.

Other Changes: We have also changed table titles and row titles in all of the tables in
Section 3. International Oil Imports and in Tables 4.7-4.18 of Section 4. Historical Oil Data Series to clearly indicate whether data are gross imports or net imports.
