The main attractions for most visitors include the dramatic displays in the Visitor Center showcasing ancient mammals that once roamed the American Plains, and the unique Cook Collection of American Indian artifacts. For those with more time, short hikes from one to three miles allow the opportunity to explore the natural history of the Niobrara River Valley and its current and past wildlife.

Note: Most Cook Collection items are not currently on exhibit as we are undergoing  renovations in the James H. Cook Gallery(planned March - May 2009). However the fossil displays and movie in the visitor center as well as the two trails are available.

James Cook raised horses as well as cattle on the Agate Springs Ranch.

Did You Know?
Grasses that make up the mixed grass prairie are excellent for grazing cattle. However, with the low annual rainfall the carrying capacity is 25 acres for one cow and calf. This makes it necessary for ranches in this area to be fairly large.
