Stephanie Evans
Head Women's Basketball Coach

In one short year at Kentucky State University, Stephanie Evans put her stamp on the Thorobrettes program, directing the team to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament and the SIAC Tournament Championship game demonstrating her commitment to building a championship caliber program. 

The 2007-2008 Thorobrettes returned to the SIAC Championship game for the first time since 2000, and to the NCAA Tourney after a ten year absence.  Finishing 19-12, the Thorobrettes were led by All-Conference player Mattie Jones, and All-Academic player Latrice Watkins. 

Since arriving at KSU, Evans has established Thorobreds Reading and Connecting with Kids (TRACK) with Hearn Elementary School, a program designed to promote reading with youth, grades K through 2nd.  Evans also continued her Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway in the Frankfort community for disadvantage families.

In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Coach Evans is active in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).  Currently, she is a member of the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll Committee, Division II Women’s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee, and has been a Division II Conference Captain in the past.

Coach Evans, played collegiate basketball and ran Cross Country at Bowie State University.  She was an All-Conference runner, and took 2nd in the 2003 CIAA Cross Country Championships.  She coached three seasons at Virginia State University (2003-2006).

Evans’ coaching experience also includes being head women’s basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C for three season, 2000-2003, and assistant coach from 1998-2000. Evans coached for one season as assistant women’s coach at Columbia Union College in 1997-1998. 

Evans received both a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology in 1997 and Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology in 1994 from Bowie State University.

Coach Evans brings head coaching experience with her to the position as well experience dealing with young people in the classroom.  While at Virginia State University, she also taught Psychology classes.

 



 

Dionne Johnson
Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

 Dionne Johnson begins her first season as assistant women’s basketball coach for the Thorobrettes. Coach Johnson comes to Kentucky State University after spending one year at Pratt Community College in Pratt, KS as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.

Before Kansas Johnson attended The University of Findlay for graduate school where she studied Athletic Training. While in Grad school she was the Assistant Women’s Basketball coach of the University’s JV program.

Johnson is no stranger to the Thorobrettes basketball program.  She played power forward from 2003-05 at Kentucky State University and was team captain and one of the leading rebounder.

Prior to KSU Johnson played at Wayne County Community College. During her freshman season Johnson helped her team in their berth to the NJCAA Regional Tournament (2001-2002). Johnson sophomore year she was team captain, She lead her team in steals and rebounds. Johnson played a key role in the teams 22-9 season, earning them a spot in the state tournament for the first time in school history. She also led her team to the first appearance in the Regional Championship game (2002-2003). In 2003 she was ranked 8th in the nation in steals and received Honorable Mention in the conference. Johnson attended Southfield High School. Originally from Detroit, MI, Johnson is a member of the (WBCA) Women’s Basketball Coach Association, and the (NATA) National Athletic Training Association. Johnson is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
 
Johnson earned an Associate of Science degree from Wayne County Community College in 2003. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Kentucky State University in 2005 and a Master of Athletic Training from The University of Findlay in 2007.
