[DNFSB LETTER HEAD]

April 29, 2008

The Honorable Samuel W. Bodman

Secretary of Energy

1000 Independence Avenue, SW

Washington, DC 20585-1000

Dear Secretary Rodman:

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (Board) issued Recommendation 94-1,

Improved Schedule for Remediation in the Defense Nuclear Facilities Complex, to address

significant risks associated with the storage and handling of nuclear materials remaining from

past nuclear weapons production. In response, the Department of Energy (DOE) remediated the

most urgent risks and subsequently incorporated the remaining open milestones into the

Implementation Plan for Recommendation 2000-1, Prioritization for Stabilizing Nuclear

Materials. Six milestones remain to be completed: one at Hanford and five at Los Alamos

National Laboratory. Given that these remaining activities are being tracked carefully through

the Implementation Plan for Recommendation 2000-1, the Board Considers Recommendation

94-1 to have been superseded by Recommendation 2000-1 and the Board closes

Recommendation 94-1.

The Board continues to monitor closely site activities related to the six open milestones,

and urge continued diligence on the part of DOE and its contractors to complete this

stabilization work in a timely manner. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please do

not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

A.J. Eggenberger

Chairman
