During winter months, the road condition report is
routinely updated four times per day (6:00 AM, 10:00 AM,
3:00 PM and 7:00 PM).
State Patrol Police Communications Operators throughout
the state prepare and update the report. State Troopers,
County Highway Department personnel, and other Law
Enforcement officers collectively work together to provide
actual "live time" road conditions for the report. In
addition to the preparation of the road condition report,
the police dispatchers are responsible for several other
critical functions. These include maintaining emergency
radio communications with law enforcement officers, and
responding to telephone calls received from the public.
Dispatcher workload is typically very heavy during periods
of bad weather, due to the increased number of vehicle
crashes, and the high volume of requests for assistance. As
soon as feasible, when driving conditions deteriorate, the
report will be updated more frequently.
The above map provides an overall representation of the
winter driving conditions on Wisconsin highways. Information
is provided for a few main highways so motorists can make
reasonable decisions concerning other roads in the area.
