The National Atomic Museum, operated for the Department of Energy by Sandia National Labs, provides educational outreach opportunities as well as historic preservation and presentation activities. Each year the museum presents the "Science is Everywhere Summer Camp" program. This exciting event exposes kids to hands-on experiences with robots, rockets, the environment, engineering, and energy, all in a fun and exploratory fashion. This year, the museum had over 350 campers from 8 to 12 years of age.
The National Atomic Museum has launched the "Up 'n' Atom Mobile" program that takes hands-on science education activities to small towns and pueblos in New Mexico. Students in communities across NM are benefiting from the museum.
The museum contains the first "ZOOMzone" in New Mexico, which is one of only 15 nationwide. ZOOMzone is a place to kids to explore science activities or develop their own experiments. This program is based on the popular ZOOM show seen daily on PBS. Our ZOOMzone is open daily and features great experiments, videos and computer learning. Partners for our ZOOMzone include the University of New Mexico's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Goodrich Optical and Space Flight Systems Division, WGBH-TV in Boston, and KNME-TV Channel 5 in Albuquerque, as well as our local schools. The Museum provides six different educational field trip programs for teachers and their students. Subjects range from Fantastic Flight, Rocket Power, The Atoms Family and Manhattan Project. Programs include Preview and Review materials, activities and demonstrations on site and a tour of the museum. Call 245-2137 ext. 103 to order an Educator's Guide.
