What does the APS do?

The APS is the nation's oldest learned society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. The Society promotes useful knowledge in the sciences and humanities through excellence in scholarly research, professional meetings, publications, library resources, and community outreach. Who are the members of the APS?

The membership of the APS includes eminent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines. The names and dates of election for members are listed on the APS Members page.

 

How do members get elected?

Membership in the APS is entirely honorary and reflects extraordinary accomplishments in all fields of intellectual endeavor. Members are nominated and elected by their peers in the Society.

 

How can I apply for an APS grant or fellowship?

Eligibility, due dates, and application requirements for the various APS grant and fellowship programs are detailed on the Society's Grants Program web site.

 

How can I purchase an APS publication?

Back issues of many APS publications are available through the APS Publications Program.

 

Can the public visit the APS?

Information about visiting the current exhibition in Philosophical Hall can be found on the APS website at http://www.amphilsoc.org/exhibitions/.

In addition to our regular public hours, we welcome inquiries about class visits and special group tours. Contact our museum education staff at 215.440.3427, or by e-mail at mteeling@amphilsoc.org.

In Library Hall, exhibits drawn from the APS Library collections are open to the public between 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday. The Library is open to all researchers who demonstrate a need to use the unique resources under its care. Additional information on rules and regulations for research at the Library is available on the Library portion of the web site.

 

How can I help support the APS?

The Friends of the Library help raise funds for Library purchases and to assist research.
