Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and His Brothers in the Civil War

Robert Roper is a professor at Johns Hopkins University where he teaches writing. In graduate school, he studied with the great historian of Southern slavery, Kenneth Stampp, and with Larzer Ziff, a prolific scholar of American literary culture–both at Berkeley. Although trained as an historian, Roper took a thirty-year holiday during which he mostly wrote novels?he is an American writer saturated with American literature.

Robert Roper’s Now the Drum of War: Walt Whitman and His Brothers in the Civil War is a delicious take on the Civil War: an intimate family biography of the Whitman family during this terrible contest told through the back and forth of letters. Meticulously researched, it is by turns fresh, illuminating, and touching.
