    Welcome to the MSB
    Division of Mammals

The Museum of Southwestern Biology Mammal Division, established in 1936, is rich in natural history material containing over 175,000 accessioned specimens. The mammal collection is world-wide in scope (68 countries) with particularly strong holdings from the Southwestern United States, Beringia, and Latin America. It is also taxonomically broad, representing 25 orders, the majority from the Orders Rodentia (127,882), Chiroptera (20,777), Carnivora (7,084), and Soricomorpha (4,914). Over the last five years, our average increase in catalogued specimens was 5,300 per year, and overall growth was 20%. Use of the collection has increased tremendously through the utilization of our web-based database and reflects a new trend in specimen-based research and further demonstrates the value of World Wide Web accessibility. We adhere to the American Society of Mammalogists standards with regard to Systematic Collection accreditation and database standards.
