Description
Position Description: The Retail Operations Manager is responsible for all functions in Gift Shop and Bookstore. He/she supervises sales staff and volunteers, manages retail operations, merchandising, and purchases all items for sale in the gift shop. He/she is an expert source of information on the items and books representing the natural and cultural resources of the Colorado Plateau. Major Tasks and Responsibilities: • Provide the highest level of customer service. • Supervise and trains museum shop and bookstore staff and volunteers. • Educate staff and volunteers of their sales goals, information concerning artists and merchandise. • Maintain staff and volunteer schedule and time sheets. • Merchandising artists’ pieces to attract customers and increase sales. • Purchase katsinas, baskets, jewelry, and other Native American creations for sale in the museum shop. • Develop and maintain artist biography file. • Maintain customer list and special order file. • Maintain consignments file. • Meet or exceed monthly sales, while keeping expenses down. • Prepare and maintain the Shop and Bookstore annual budget. • Provide daily recap of sales and receipts to the business office with special attention to layaways and memberships. • Oversee receipt, inventory, tracking, and sale of items purchased for sale in the museum shop. • Oversee the Bookstore’s inventory by assisting the bookstore manager with purchasing, pricing and marketing bookstore items. • Acts as an enthusiastic advocate and personal representative for the Museum by promoting its resources, programs and services through a high level of customer service. • Provide accurate information to visitors on books, jewelry, kachinas, rugs, and other items for sale in the retail stores. Other Tasks • Create monthly budgets for expenses including inventory and wages and expected income from sales • Monitor sales and purchases of items so that expected expenses do not exceed income through sales and donations to the department • Work closely with marketing and publications departments to promote the shops when appropriate. • Utilize ideas from collections and exhibits to purchase and display items for sale relevant to the mission of the Museum to “increase and diffuse knowledge and appreciation of science and art” • Promote established and emerging artists through sales of their items in the shops. • Pack and unpack fragile items for display or sales. • Order and stock shops office and shipping supplies.

Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements: • B.A. or B.S. in Business, Marketing or related field. M.S. or M.B.A. preferred. • Minimum of five years experience as a manager in service oriented environment. • Minimum of four years purchasing Native American arts and crafts of the Colorado Plateau region. • Five years experience supervising and motivating sales staff and volunteers required. • Accounting and budgeting experience required. • Experience working with security systems and safety precautions. • Satisfactory driving history record. Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge: • Demonstrated ability to communicate, orally and in writing, with culturally diverse communities. • Organizational skills, an ability to multitask, and an ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters. • Ability to utilize computerized inventory system, point of sale system, Microsoft Office Suite, email, and internet. • Knowledge of techniques used to safely pack, display, and unpack items of ceramic, wood, feathers, glass, and other fragile materials. • Trustworthiness and ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters. • Ability to maintain professional sales demeanor with visitors and other staff. • Comfort in dealing with the public, including children, disabled, elderly and culturally diverse visitors. Working Conditions: Generally work indoors, 7 or more hours per day, usually between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm. Some weekend and evening work required. Odd hours and long days may be required during Heritage Programs and other special events, occasionally to pick up, purchase, or return items. Other Requirements • Ability to travel throughout the Colorado Plateau region from time to time • Valid Arizona Driver’s License and ability to drive to remote areas unaccompanied • Visual acuity for inspecting arts and crafts, for creating charts and reports. • Ability to stand or sit for long periods, to stoop and bend, to lift at least 30 pounds, and to pack or unpack fragile items.
