About this Page
|
|
All parameters are optional.
Enter at least one parameter, and press the Search button.
Using this page, look for observations
by specifying attributes of the observation records (for instance, Shasta County),
and by specifying attributes of the species observed (for instance,
native, or CNPS Rare).
|
Fields
|
PLANT names
|
full scientific name |
Enter a complete scientific name.
The field is case-sensitive, as genus names are capitalized.
To search for a hybrid species name,
place an uppercase X directly before the specific epithet.
If you enter
Quercus Xacutidens,
it will find
Quercus ×acutidens.
To search by genus only, press the + Advanced link in the
lower right.
|
Add synonyms |
Scientific names of plants have changed over time.
A synonym is a scientific name deemed not current
by one or more
nomenclature authority.
If you specify a scientific name and check Add synonyms,
the search will look for observation records not only
by the name you entered, but also by any synonyms of that name.
However, Calflora follows several nomenclature authorities, and
they do not always agree.
You may choose a reference authority
(or a package of reference authorities)
from the drop down list.
The choice of reference authority has an effect
on the apparent distribution of various species.
The widest interpretation of distribution will be the
one with the most synonyms, and the narrowest interpretation
will be the one with the least.
|
PLANT attributes
|
nativity |
Select native or non-native, or any if you want to see both.
|
lifeform |
Select one or more lifeform.
|
status |
Use this field to select special status plants, such as
those considered rare by CNPS.
|
LOCATION
| |
county |
Select one or more county.
|
Boundaries of a rectangle |
Descripe a bounding box around the area of interest in
decimal latitude/longitude. north means the northern
edge of the box; the query will include all points south of
the northern edge.
Note that longitude is expressed as a negative number.
For example, here is a bounding box around Orange County:
north: 34
south: 33
west: -118.5
east: -117
|
location description |
Inlude a word or phrase here that may occur in the
location description of certain records.
For instance, if you are interested in Mt. Diablo,
you might select Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and
put Diablo in the location description.
Note that the kind of information in the location description
field varies widely between observers.
|
elevation |
Enter an elevation range in meters. Note that not all records
have elevation. If you specify an elevation in the query, records
without an elevation will be excluded.
|
META DATA
| |
observer |
Enter, for instance, the observer's last name.
|
contributor |
Enter part of the name of the contributing institution.
If you enter Riverside the search will find
UC Riverside Herbarium.
|
documentation |
What kind of evidence is there behind this observation?
|
DISPLAY
|
Choose what to display in the results.
The default form is as a table of observations,
paged into groups of fifty. You may also
choose plain text (displays all records
on one page), or count (displays
just the number of matching records found).
If you choose Species list, the search will
analyze the selected observations for distinct species.
Synonyms are grouped together according to the nomenclature
authority chosen at the top of the form.
You can modify how the species list is presented by selecting
Include photo or Group by family.
Uncheck Map if you do not want to see a map of the results.
Uncheck Search form if you do not want to see the query form repeated
on the first page of results.
If you press + Advanced, the form will get bigger, allowing you to
query by some additional fields.
|
Results
|
In the results, this page will show each observation
meeting the criteria. If there are more than fifty results,
they are broken up into pages with fifty on each page.
On any page where the query form is not showing,
you may return to the query form
by pressing
View or Change Query.
Invoke the Map Viewer by clicking on the map.
From within the map viewer, you can change the map area
(by zooming or moving the center), and then re-run the observation
query for the new area.
