DOE Requests Data Pursuant to Executive Order 13423 Reporting Requirements on Achieving Sustainable Environmental Stewardship Goals

On September 26, 2008, the DOE Office of Nuclear Safety, Quality Assurance and Environment (HS-20) issued a memorandum entitled, "Annual Progress Reports on Implementation of Environmental Provisions of Executive Order 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management." The memorandum requests that DOE facilities provide data for the FY 2008 environmental progress report on DOE's implementation of E.O. 13423 using the Pollution Prevention Tracking and Reporting System (PPTRS) between October 1, 2008, and December 31, 2008. Guidance on FY 2008 reporting is available through the HS-20 guide, Pollution Prevention Tracking and Reporting System Fiscal Year 2008 Data Entry Guidance (October 2008). Updated Information Brief on Implementing Electronics Stewardship at DOE Available

In October 2008 the DOE Office of Environmental Policy and Assistance (HS-22) updated an Information Brief entitled, Implementing Electronics Stewardship at the U.S. Department of Energy (HS-20-IB-2007-01). This comprehensive update and revision of the March 2007 version incorporates new requirements from DOE O 450.1A, Environmental Protection Program, and Executive Order 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management. The Information Brief is a one-stop resource for the life-cycle management of electronic assets, including acquisition of environmentally preferable electronics, operation and maintenance practices maximizing energy efficiency and extending the life of electronic assets, and reuse and recycling of surplus and end-of-life electronics. Please use the link below to access a PDF file of the DOE Information Brief.

DOE EMS Status Report Available

On October 1, 2008, the DOE Office of Nuclear Safety, Quality Assurance and Environment (HS-20) transmitted a report to the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive in response to a letter of July 15, 2008, requesting the status of environmental management systems (EMSs) at the Department of Energy, specifically those DOE facilities identified as "appropriate facilities" as of January 24, 2007. The report indicates that all forty-three of the Department's identified "appropriate facilities" had EMSs in place prior to January 24, 2007, and all DOE appropriate facilities are on schedule to be declared "fully implemented" by June 30, 2009. Information Notice on Updated Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery Standards Available

On September 12, 2008, the DOE Office of Environmental Policy and Assistance (HS-22) issued an Environmental Policy and Assistance Information Notice, "Environmental Protection Agency Final Clean Air Act Rule: Protection of Stratospheric Ozone Revision of Refrigerant Recovery Only Equipment Standards" that discusses the June 18, 2008, EPA direct final rule (73 FR 34644) which updates motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) refrigerant recovery only equipment standards. The rule revises Appendix D of 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart B, "Standard for HFC-134a Recover-Only Equipment" in response to an update by SAE of its corresponding standard for this equipment by establishing the minimum requirements for the recovery of HFC-134a (sometimes referred to as R-134a) refrigerant that has been directly removed from mobile air conditioning (A/C) systems. Please use the links below to access PDF files of the DOE Information Notice and the EPA direct final rule.
