Four free barley workshops will be held in Montana and North Dakota in January

The Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences at North Dakota State University will coordinate four barley workshops in Montana and North Dakota in January 2009

The workshop "Barley Production and Management for Profit" will be held Jan. 12 in Dickinson, N.D.; Jan. 14 in Sidney, Mont.; Jan. 15 in Minot, N.D.; and Jan. 22 in Conrad, Mont. They are free, with lunch provided, but registration is requested.

Monday Jan. 12 the workshop in Dickinson will be held at the Days Inn Grand Dakota Lodge and Conference Center. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:55 am. Wednesday Jan. 14, the workshop will be in Sidney at St. Matthews Parish Center, 310 7th Street SE. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the program will start at 8:55 a.m. To preregister, contact Ben Larson (406) 433-1206 or blarson@montana.edu at the Montana State University Extension office in Richland County or Hertsgaard.

Thursday, Jan. 15, the workshop will be at the Holiday Inn Riverside in Minot. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with program starting at 8:55 a.m. To preregister, contact either Mike Rose (701) 857-6444 or emailing Mike.Rose@ndsu.edu at the Ward County Extension Office or Hertsgaard.

Thursday Jan. 22, the final workshop will be held at Norley Hall in Conrad. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:30 a.m. Pre-registration is requested by contacting either Dan Picard (406) 271-4054 or dpicard@montana.edu at the MSU Extension office in Pondera County or Hertsgaard.

Topics covered during the meetings will include pricing and marketing information; agronomy updates; barley and malt quality information; barley disease management; insurance updates; crop rotation information; variety development updates; irrigation practices information; production economics updates; insect problems in barley; updates on food barley; and updates on organizations supporting barley research including the IBMS, the American Malting Barley Association, the USDA-CSREES funded Barley Coordinated Agricultural Project and Barley for Rural Development.

Among the many speakers will be Dwight Aakre, North Dakota State University Extension farm management specialist; Vern Anderson, NDSU animal scientist at the Carrington Research Extension Center; Roger Ashley, NDSU area Extension cropping systems specialist; Grant Jackson, MSU professor of agronomy at the Western Triangle Ag Research Center at Conrad; Kent McVay MSU Extension cropping systems specialist at the Southern Ag Research Center at Huntley, Mont.; Ben Larson of MSU Extension's Richland County office; Kevin Wanner, MSU Extension entomologist, and Tom Blake, MSU barley breeder.
