The Office of Nuclear Energy promotes nuclear power as a resource capable of meeting the Nation's energy, environmental and national security needs by resolving technical and regulatory barriers through research, development and demonstration.
2009 Office of Nuclear Energy Performance Plan
This Performance Plan captures the Office of Nuclear Energy's (NE) performance in critical program areas for Fiscal Year (FY) 2008 and how NE plans to assess them in FY 2009. In addition, it provides our stakeholders with an overview of NE's programs, funding profile, and the Office's designated role within the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Strategic Plan.

DOE Issues Draft Environmental Assessment for Disposition of Excess Uranium Inventories
December 23, 2008 The Department of Energy (DOE) has issued the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Disposition of DOE Excess Depleted Uranium, Natural Uranium, and Low-Enriched Uranium for comments by January 30, 2009. The Draft EA analyzes the environmental impacts of alternative strategies for the management of excess uranium inventories currently stored at the DOE Portsmouth, Ohio, and Paducah, Kentucky, sites. DOE Issues Excess Uranium Inventory Management Plan

DOE today issued the Excess Uranium Inventory Management Plan, which outlines the Department’s strategy for the management and disposition of its excess uranium inventories. The Plan highlights DOE’s ongoing efforts to enhance national security and promote a healthy domestic nuclear infrastructure through the efficient and cost-effective management of its excess uranium inventories. It also provides a strategy for the sale or alternative disposition of those inventories in a manner consistent with the Secretary’s Policy Statement issued in March 2008. GNEP Nations Hold Infrastructure Development Working Group Meeting

WASHINGTON, DC – Representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) participated this week in the third Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) Infrastructure Development Working Group (IDWG), underscoring the Department’s commitment to ensuring that global expansion of civilian nuclear power is done safely and securely, while reducing the risk of nuclear proliferation and responsibly managing waste. > more
DOE Extends Deadline for Draft GNEP PEIS Comment Period

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued a notification in the Federal Register today that it is extending the comment period on the Draft Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) by 90 days. The Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, is pleased to announce its 2009 University Programs (NEUP) research and development (R&D) solicitation. The solicitation is open to all U.S. colleges and universities. R&D awards under this solicitation are expected to total between $13M -$50M, based on available funding. > more

Nuclear Energy Outlook Published by OECD Nuclear Energy Agency

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published its first Nuclear Energy Outlook, in connection with the NEA's 50th anniversary celebration. The NEA said the new publication is designed to make an important contribution to ongoing discussions of nuclear energy's potential role in the energy mixes of its member countries, including the United States. "Life Beyond 60" Workshop Summary Report Issued
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) jointly sponsored the Life Beyond 60: NRC/DOE Workshop on U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Life Extension Research and Development on February 19–21, 2008. The report on the workshop proceedings has now been issued and is available here.
