The U.S. Geological Survey of the Department of the Interior and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are presenting a series of topical workshops pertaining to mapping, vegetation, soils, photo-interpretation, remote sensing, geospatial data, and Geographical Information Systems. The workshops are part of an effort to exchange information and provide access to spatial technologies developed at the centers for natural resource surveys. The workshops are available to the general public, educators, state and federal agencies. Workshop participation by the international community is also greatly encouraged. Workshop participants are eligible to receive continuing education units (CEU's) for a fee of $10 in addition to the standard registration expense.

Most of the workshops are 2 to 3 days long, creating compact presentation of materials. No previous experience in any of the topical workshop is assumed, except for advanced workshops. Appropriate handouts, photos, maps, and other forms of distributed materials are provided to the workshop participants. Some workshops will have scheduled field exercises. Hands-on exercises are utilized to involve workshop participation. Specialized workshop topics and transient workshops can be arranged based upon consultation and number of workshop participants. Scheduled workshops are subject to change. Please contact the workshop coordinator at the listed phone for workshop information.

Date Workshop Title Workshop Description Location Cost
April 1-3 NWRC/SAB Metadata Training   NASA/UL Regional Application Center (map)
April 22-23 Introduction to ArcGIS 1 This two-day course introduces participants to ArcGIS™ and provides the foundation for becoming a successful ArcView®, ArcEditor™, or ArcInfo™ user. Participants learn how to use ArcMap™, ArcCatalog™, and ArcToolbox™ and explore how these applications work together to provide a complete GIS software solution. The course covers fundamental GIS concepts as well as how to create, edit, and work with georeferenced spatial data. Participants learn how to manipulate tabular data, query a GIS database, and present data clearly and efficiently using maps and charts. NASA/UL Regional Application Center (map) $450
June 3-4 Hurricane Season Geospatial/Imagery Data Availability: Data Mining This 2-day workshop presents various available geospatial/imagery data sets including 2008 proposed and planned geospatial/imagery data sets. These data sets have been collected and archived primarily by various federal, state and local agencies in Louisiana and throughout the nation. Representatives from various federal, state and local agencies will give presentations on geospatial or imagery data that have been collected and made available on their websites. Each government or local organization employs different access procedures, search strategies, terminology, and acronyms to the various data sets. Workshop exercises will allow participants to identify, locate, survey, examine and view the various available geospatial/imagery data sets. NASA/UL Regional Application Center (map) Free
Sept. 23-24 Introduction to ArcGIS 1 (see above) NASA/UL Regional Application Center (map) $450
Oct. 29-31 Introduction to Wetland Remote Sensing and Mapping This course is designed as an intensive introductory 3 day session of lectures, discussions, and a hands-on exercise that emphasizes the use of aerial photography as applied to assessing and mapping wetland vegetation from species level to broad vegetative level classification. Included is a field trip to verify wetland interpretations made in the classroom. Course content has been designed for field biologists, researchers, and others who deal with wetland wildlife habitat, environmental quality and impact assessment. Since interest in this workshop is likely to be high, an early application is suggested.   $350
November 3-5 Advanced Wetland Photo-Interpretation This three day workshop will cover: The development of a methodology for mapping wetlands projects, an understanding of the NWI wetland and the National Wetlands Research Center upland classification systems, Photointerpretation of color infrared aerial photographs, the use of soil surveys, topographic maps and historical wetland maps as aids in the Photointerpretation process, techniques for groundtruthing, and cartographic transformation of photointerpreted habitats to a standard base map. This course will include classroom lecture, classroom exercises in photointerpretation of habitats using a stereoscope, fieldwork, cartographic transformation using a zoom transfer scope. An understanding of the identification of wetland habitats from aerial photographs (*as presented in the Introduction to Remote Sensing and Photointerpretation of Wetlands) is essential for this workshop.
*Work related experiences can be substituted for the introductory workshop.
  $350
