More about the Collection The herbarium was founded on the collection of Daniel Cleveland, dating to the 1870s. Reid Moran's collections from Baja California, made primarily in the 1960s through the 1980s, built the herbarium into one of the best for that region. Jon Rebman's collections continue to build on that strength. There are significant holdings in Crassulaceae and Cactaceae. About 60% of the collection has been entered into the department's specimen database. Database searches can be performed on request. Please call or email for details. Our Type Specimen Database was released as a pilot project in February 2000. Research Activities The department maintains a synoptic collection of the voucher specimens that document the checklist of the Vascular Plants of San Diego County and continually adds to and updates that checklist. The department is compiling a specimen-based checklist of the flora of Imperial County, California, and of the flora of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. These lists will be an important resource for researchers in these areas, and will form a starting point for more ambitious floristics projects.
