GRE, MCAT, and Other Tests

GRE

Anyone who plans to go to graduate school should take the Advanced Biology Test no later than the fall (October) of the senior year since some graduate schools require the score. It is also advisable to take the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical portions of the GRE as well; these are also is required by some graduate schools.

Early in the academic year, a schedule of dates, times, and sites for the GRE will be available in the Biology Office or at the Registrar's Office. Call 1-800-GRE-CALL for up-to-date information. or go to www.gre.org.

MCAT, VAT, or DAT

Students with interests in the health care professions should take the MCAT, DAT, or appropriate test for admission. See the appropriate website for online registration materials. The MCAT is given twice a year (April and August) while the DAT is given at a testing center by appointment. Generally, it is best to take the MCAT in the spring of the junior year. Students should take the test at least one year in advance of the desired date of admission. For example, a student desiring to begin medical school in the fall following graduation must take the test no later than August of the senior year. Some students prefer to take the exam in the spring of the junior year and then retake it, if necessary, in August of the senior year. In some cases, it may be desirable to complete more courses, take the MCAT in the spring of the senior year and postpone entry to medical school.
