Trailing 31-24 in the fourth quarter, PSU was called for roughing the kicker when freshman safety Cody Worthen collided with Aggies punter Brett Dickinson on fourth-and-9 at the UC Davis 45-yard line.

Timbers put on show in shutout of Miami

In most self-evaluations after Portland Timbers games this season, about half the players rated themselves an '8,' '9' or 10 out of 10, defender Justin Thompson said. The other half, he said, turned in medicore '6' or 7' scores.

But on Thursday night against the Miami FC Blues, each Timbers starter and substitute earned a top grade for the first time all season, Thompson said.

Entering Portland's final push to make the playoffs, it couldn't have come at a better time. The Timbers crushed the Blues 4-0 in what both sides considered a "must-win" game. Chris Brown scored twice off of penality kicks in front of a PGE Park crowd of 8,219. Byron Alvarez and Cameron Dunn each scored once.

University of Portland sophomore Sophie Schmidt became an unlikely hero Monday in a "must-win" game for the Pilots against the defending national champion USC Trojans.

Schmidt entered the women's soccer match as a substitute for an injured teammate, then, motivated by a pep talk by Pilots coach Garrett Smith, scored the game-winning goal in overtime that toppled top-ranked USC 1-0 in front of 3,280 at Merlo Field.

"It was a must win, for sure," Schmidt said. "Garrett told us we had to win and do everything possible to win."

Ducks Fall to No. 25 Purdue

Posted by The Oregonian August 31, 2008 16:20PM

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's soccer team fell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to No. 25 Purdue, the second nationally-ranked team the Ducks have played in their opening three games in 2008.

Oregon got onto the scoreboard in the 88th minute when sophomore midfielder Kirstie Kuhns placed a perfect crossing pass across the Purdue defense where junior forward Teresa Bowns was waiting at the back post for an easy goal. It was Bowns' first score of the season and sixth of her career and Kuhns' first assist career assist.
