MMS California Area Employees

Maintaining a state of readiness that will allow us to respond to emergency situations is critical for all of the MMS workforce. The lessons we learned from hurricane Katrina must provide building blocks to enable more effective responses to future disasters. One of the critical lessons learned was that our post-event method(s) of communicating with and accounting for our employees was seriously flawed. It took more than two weeks to account for our employees.

In an effort to alleviate this issue, we have established a toll free Emergency Information Hotline Number for all MMS employees nationwide. Please review the instructions below on how the emergency hotline will operate and what you can expect when you call. PLEASE NOTE: For short term emergencies/evocations affecting the California offices or location (e.g., adverse weather conditions, brush fires), please continue to call the local MMS emergency number at 805-389-4546 for information and instructions.

Toll Free Emergency Information Hotline Number
1-866-4-DOI-MMS (1-866-436-4667)

Long-Term disaster declared: please call 1-866-4-DOI-MMS (1-866-436-4667). You will be asked to choose one of three options. To access the California location, choose option 3 (western United States). The hotline provides instructions and may be staffed to collect data on displaced employees. Employees are encouraged to call this number as soon as possible after an event, but required to call no later than 72 hours after a disaster. 

Every employee is required to call the Emergency Hotline Number within 72-hours after a disaster and at weekly intervals unless instructed differently by the hotline instructions.

The Hotline Number is the only official place for employees to report their whereabouts.

If a disaster is declared, the answering service is activated for data collection. Anyone calling this number should be prepared to provide the following information:

1. Name
2. Organization where you work
3. A phone number where you may be reached
4. An e-mail address where you may be reached

Pocket cards are available, with one side for local information; the other with the toll free Emergency Information Hotline Number.
