Health Data Information

TOXMAP's health layers were generated using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program SEER*Stat Database: Mortality - All Causes of Death, Public-Use With County, Total US (1990-2005), National Cancer Institute, DCCPS, Surveillance Research Program, Cancer Statistics Branch, released April 2008. Underlying mortality data provided by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These layers include selected county-level demographics. Death rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 US standard population (19 age groups). Katrina/Rita adjusted populations were used.

For more information, see the EPA's TRI Hazard Information and the National Toxicology Program's Report on Carcinogens (RoC).

NOTE: The co-occurence of a substance and a particular health problem does not by itself imply an effect on human health by that substance; the association of two or more variables (correlation) does not, by itself, imply a cause and effect relationship.

TOXMAP overlays data that is available on a nationwide, county level. Detailed health data of this type is very sparse for some races and ethnicities nationwide. To see data for other races, see SEER's options for accessing the data.
