The USCAR Directors visited Argonne's Transportation Technology R&D Center (TTRDC) on October 30 and 31, 2008. USCAR is the Department of Energy's (DOE's) partner in the FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership. This visit highlighted Argonne's innovative projects, facilities, capabilities and expertise.

During the wrap-up session at the end of the day on Thursday, the Directors were highly complimentary of Argonne's research when one said, "Everything we saw today was highly relevant to the industry's needs."

The visitors included Ann Schlenker from Chrysler; John Sakioka from Ford; Bill Peirce and George Andrews from GM; and Don Walkowicz, Mike Martin and Natalie Olds from USCAR.

During the visit, the Directors toured the transportation research facilities and heard presentations on:

  • the future of the lithium economy
  • Practical automotive applications derived from high-energy X-rays (pdf; 13MB)
  • Fuel spray diagnostics using X-ray radiography (pdf; 2.5MB)
  • Battery electrode structural analysis
  • Tribology
  • Applied battery R&D
  • Mn-SpinelsSystem for automotive applications
  • Hydrogen fuel cell research
  • PHEV standard testing procedure (SAE J1711)
  • Vehicle modeling and simulation (pdf; 1.3MB)
  • Benchmarking advanced technology vehicles (pdf; 8.8MB)
  • In-cylinder combustion R&D (pdf; 1.15MB)
  • CRADA recycling (pdf; 16.4MB)
  • Advanced computation for industrial design
Larry Johnson, Director of Argonne’s Transportation R&D Center, said, “We were pleased to spend the day with our auto industry partners to show them the broad range of research we are doing to help them reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”
