Photo Library - Nuclear Rocket Development Station (NRDS)
The idea to use atomic energy to propel a rocket for interplanetary
travel originated in 1906 when American space pioneer Robert Goddard, a
college sophomore, wrote a paper on the use of atomic energy. The
concept moved from theory to reality in the mid-1950s when the United
States launched a nuclear rocket program called Project Rover.
