    What is Holistic Management®?

Holistic Management® is an approach to managing resources that builds biodiversity, improves production and generates financial strength; it improves quality of life while enhancing the environment that sustains us all.

    How did Holistic Management® originate?

Holistic Management® originated when HMI’s founder, Allan Savory, set out as a
young wildlife biologist in his native Zimbabwe to solve the riddle of desertification. His
efforts resulted in the development of the Holistic Management® Model — a proven, whole farm/whole system approach to resource management that incorporates financial planning, land planning, grazing planning and biological monitoring. The process increases soil health, reduces erosion, improves biodiversity and enhances productivity by working with Nature.

    What is Desertification?

Desertification is generally defined as the advance of deserts or desert-like conditions that mainly occur in arid or semi-arid areas, but that definition should really include any area that is losing soil cover and life, or biological diversity.

What distinguishes HMI training from classes offered by other organizations and agriculture consultants?

As the originators of Holistic Management®, we trained a significant percentage of the land management organizations, consultants and trainers working and selling services today. Unlike other approaches to land resource management, Holistic Management® offers the farmer or rancher a comprehensive framework for making all the decisions that impact health and productivity. Holistic Management® replaces fragmentary decision-making and short-term solutions with a practical approach that encompasses the whole process of managing healthy land.

If I make a donation to HMI, what is my contribution used for?

I know Holistic Management® has achieved results in many locations,
but will it work for me?

Every farm and ranch is unique and Holistic Management® enables you to deal with that uniqueness. While the principles are universal, the process requires you to manage for your situation using Holistic Management® techniques tailored to your region, your land, your operation. HMI approaches each case and each region individually. Look at our Case Histories or read farm- and ranch-related Testimonials to see the impact of Holistic Management® on rangeland, grassland and riparian environments across several continents.

I’d like to see the kinds of results that Holistic Management® can produce, but I’m concerned about the financial risk. How will I know if it’s working for me?

When you manage holistically, you know how to manage your land and your finances to maximize your investment.
