MIDWEST/INTERMOUNTAIN/SOUTHEAST REGIONS
Update On Hurricane Ike, Tropical Storm Lowell
Some parks in Midwest Region that were hit by the remnants of Hurricane Ike have reported in, with others are unable to communicate yet due to power and phone outages. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Lowell, which came ashore in the U.S. from the Pacific Ocean, has caused closures and evacuations at Big Bend due to rising waters in the Rio Grande.

Injured Climber Rescued From Backcountry
A climber suffered a severely broken foot in a fall from a popular climbing route in the park’s backcountry and had to be rescued. The park is now internationally known for its world-class climbing areas and sees about 6,000 climbers annually.


INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE - IN
Marijuana Harvester Apprehended
A ranger on patrol in an area known for its wild marijuana found some plants near the boundary that had been “adopted” by someone. A 41-year-old man was subsequently arrested for tending to them and harvesting the leaves.

The United States Park Police regrets to report the death of retired Sergeant Al Capasso, age 94. He died at a hospice facility in Hawaii on Sunday, August 31st.
