About Hands on the Land

America's Largest
Classroom

Hands on the Land (HOL) is a network of field classrooms stretching across America from Alaska to Florida. HOL is sponsored by Partners in Resource Education, a collaboration of five Federal agencies, a non-profit foundation, schools, and other private sector partners. Click the icons to the right to learn more about HOL's sponsors. And if you'd like to learn more about the field classrooms themselves, click Site Profiles at the top of the page.

Public lands comprise approximately one-third of the acreage of the U.S., and you'll soon see they are rich in historical, archeological and environmental learning opportunities. Through the HOL network of field classrooms, Federal agencies are providing a diverse array of hands-on learning opportunities for teachers and students. And, in addition to the field activities at each site, teachers and students are learning from each other through the HOL web site. This web site allows teachers and students to share information and learn about their local ecosystems, creative teaching strategies, and much more!

The web site is designed primarily for Teachers and Program Providers (A Program Provider is a Federal employee responsible for managing education programs on one of our nation's Federal public lands such as national forests, parks, wildlife refuges, recreation areas, and other private lands available to HOL).

Are You Ready to be Outdoors?

We invite you to explore our web site to learn more about the wonderful learning experiences that our Federal lands provide for our nation's schools. We hope you'll become as excited as we are about this wonderful opportunity, and that you'll consider supporting our efforts to improve student learning through environmental education by joining the HOL Network. After you've had the chance to explore our site, we encourage you to click here to learn how you can join.
