Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Geotourism Mapguide Project
The National Geographic Society, Wyoming Travel & Tourism (WTT), Montana Travel & Tourism and Idaho Travel & Tourism met on September 17-18, 2008 at the Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, WY to decide the future of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Mapquide Project. In total we received over 800 nominations for the mapquide, and around 200 sites will appear on the final map.

The final map will be released in the spring of 2009. The Greater Yellowstone region straddles Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Centered around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the region includes 20 million acres of rugged mountains, picturesque river valleys, high desert plains, and distinctive communities.

The goal of the project is to map the distinctive natural, cultural, and historical features of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Project next steps after the nomination process include: the stewardship council (made up of representatives from Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and National Geographic) meeting to decide mapguide sites from the nominations and creating the map themes, layout, writing and photography.

These Geotourism MapGuides are different from standard tourist maps in their focus on fostering tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, and heritage, and the well-being of its residents. National Geographic calls this “geotourism.” The MapGuides, created through a collaborative process, highlight the natural, historic, and cultural assets unique to a destination. In this partnership, our region benefits from National Geographic’s considerable map-making expertise. The two-sided map will be available to residents and visitors in the spring of 2009, and will be augmented with a Web site packed with educational information: www.YellowstoneGeotourism.net.

Destination Marketing Specialist (DMS) Program
Wyoming Travel & Tourism has developed a professional certification program for individuals who work with the traveling public. The purpose of the program is to acknowledge frontline personnel as certified travel professionals, develop a trained and knowledgeable workforce for the travel and tourism industry, and create a more visitor friendly Wyoming. The certification program consists of three levels of recognition with each level increasing in difficulty. Candidates will be tested on their knowledge of the state of Wyoming.  Topics include, but are not limited to, geography, history, culture, traveler safety, flora and fauna, attractions, hunting and fishing, and the economic impact of travel and tourism. For test dates and locations contact: Leslie Kedelty, Industry Services Manager at 307.777.2839 or leslie.kedelty@visitwyo.gov
