The LIMA Quest Challenge is a NASA Education Office program that had students conducting their own exploration of Antarctica using LIMA. It is described at http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lima/index.html.

Students were asked to find a feature of interest and significance, learn more about the feature, then write a short justification (proposal) explaining why their feature warranted additional study. The proposals were reviewed by a panel of scientists (see http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lima/bios.html) who offered suggestions for improvements. Interaction was through a combination of e-mail, webchats and webcasts. Over 3200 students led by 140 teachers from 33 States and 10 countries participated.

Everyone enjoyed the project immensely and the students turned in some wonderfully insightful proposals. All the final proposals can be viewed at http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lima/final.html.

The Educators Guide can be used to help any teacher direct a similar exploration activity. It is available at http://quest.nasa.gov/challenges/lima/LIMA_Ed_Guide_v2.pdf.
